The RPCard Teen Spotlight:

Newsweek Minority Report- by Evan ThomasFebruary 19, 2010
American universities are accepting more minorities than ever. Graduating them is another matter. Barry Mills, the president of Bowdoin College, was justifiably proud of Bowdoin's efforts to recruit minority students. Since 2003 the small, elite liberal-arts school in Brunswick, Maine, has boosted the proportion of so-called underrepresented minority students (blacks, Latinos, and Native Americans, about 30 percent of the U.S. population) in entering freshman classes from 8 percent to 13 percent.

"It is our responsibility, given our place in the world, to reach out and attract students to come to our kinds of places," he told a NEWSWEEK reporter. But Bowdoin has not done quite as well when it comes to actually graduating minorities. While nine out of 10 white students routinely get their diplomas within six years, only seven out of 10 black students made it to graduation day in several recent classes.

Educational Scholarships

Minority Students Have Many Educational Scholarships Available To Them updated Sun Nov 27 2011 ...

Paying for college is a challenge for any student, but particularly students who come from backgrounds of financial hardship. Fortunately, there are many funding opportunities available to help talented and smart students get the education they deserve. Student scholarship programs are are one such source of funding that can help students of particular racial or economic backgrounds. While some scholarship opportunities are more generalized, others are only open to a student with certain characteristics. If you are a black student, you have many resources for college funding from a variety of notable organizations that care about your success. Organizations that work to help promising black Americans find footing in higher education and in the workforce do so because black students in this country often face significant hardships. Many black students come from families who cannot afford to put them through college, or they live in communities with poor school systems. Scholarship opportunities exist to help these students go further with their academic gifts by making higher education a possibility.
